Our Story: Two States, One Mission
Over 45 years ago, a passionate group of educators at NC State University petitioned to form a local TESOL affiliate. In 1978, the North Carolina Association of TESOL was officially born. Recognizing that we are stronger together, in 1984, TESOL faculty from the University of South Carolina joined forces with North Carolina to officially create a single, unified affiliate: Carolina TESOL. Over the decades, we've evolved from a small circle of intensive English institute instructors into a massive network of K-12 and post-secondary educators. We pioneered regional ESL teacher certifications, embraced digital learning, and even took our mission to Washington, D.C., for National Advocacy Days.
Who We Are Today
Today, Carolina TESOL bridges the gap between K-12 classrooms, higher education, and intensive English programs across both North and South Carolina. We will host our 40th annual fall conference November 11-13, 2026 in Charleston, SC. Whether you are looking for regional conference insights, teaching resources, or a community that just gets it, you've found your home. Welcome to Carolina TESOL!
